Upcoming Workshops:

Finding the Fluid Core

What is core strength?
Developing core strength is often pursued as an acute and focused hardening or ‘corseting’ around our abdominal centers. While this muscular development can create a certain amount of stability, it can also lead to imbalance in both the muscular and digestive systems creating postural and health disturbances.

In this workshop we will learn the foundations of a healthy core, including dynamic breathing, movement and vitality of the organs, skeletal posture and spinal alignment, and the yogic “bandhas”. We will discuss and explore human developmental patterns that create natural balance and axis points to create strength and stability while maintaining a soft and organic approach to movement.

Students will learn how to move in and out of postures and how to hold postures with a fluid sense of balance, ease and internal support.

$30 in advance, $40 at the door. Preregister at http://theyogaspace.com/workshops

Saturday, June 12th 3:30pm-6pm at The People’s Yoga
Renee Sills and Benjamin Hart: Partner Yoga and Acro Basics

Partner Yoga Basics is a playful and fun workshop focusing on dynamic partner work and acro yoga basics followed by a rejuvenating sequence of Thai Yoga Massage.
Yoga is the union of mind and body, through which we discover a healthier way of living and a more peaceful spirit. By practicing with another person, not only can we go deeper into the postures but we become more attuned to our own body while being present with another person.
Some poses challenge your balance, strength and flexibility, others require trust and surrender. Both partners can encourage, assist in proper alignment and offer much needed human contact.
Students will learn techniques on connecting through contact and partner variations in standing, seated postures and inversions. We’ll cover Acro FUNdamentals such as weight bearing, balancing and group assists. Students will learn a basic Thai Yoga Massage sequence.

This class is a pre-requisite for the Partner Progression series that will begin in September, 2010.

No partner is needed to register. $30 per person or come with a friend for $50.

Pregister online or reserve a space at http://www.thepeoplesyoga.org

Working Through The Layers- Ashtanga Vinyasa From The Inside Out

This workshop will focus on the Ashtanga primary series, exploring the intricacies of the postures and their modifications. Each session will focus on Surya Namaskar, standing poses and finishing postures (backbends and inversions) and we will progress systematically through the primary series and transitions, developing the ability to move fluidly between the asanas while maintaining a strong connection with the support of the internal systems (muscular, skeletal, organ). Students will learn the foundation and intention of each posture and its affect on the body as whole, including which organs support and release in the posture, the connection of the nervous and endocrine systems, the structure of the skeleton and the role of the bandhas and breath.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike, for anyone that has ever been intimidated by the Ashtanga practice and for everyone that wishes to deepen their explorations in the subtleties of asana, bandhas and breath.

$35 per session or $120 for the series of 4 sessions

Each class will feature a specific asana or asana family (i.e. peacock pose, backbends), we’ll discuss and practice the mechanics of safely and efficiently working towards the final posture. Each class will include preparatory postures and modifications.  Advanced Asana is a good opportunity to learn the alignment and execution of many of the postures that may be incorporated into Vinyasa 2.
This class is suitable to those students who have been practicing for a minimum of 6 months.
